Burton traveled to the Kingdom of Dahome in order to establish trade relationships, to protest the kingdom's involvement in the slave trade, and to investigate charges that King Gelele participated in ritual human sacrifice.

Rebound in quarter leather and contemporary green covers with raised bands and gilt lettering to spines including Salisbury Public Library. Corners are a little bumped with fraying at the edges of the spines. The marbled end papers have a library book paste down which has been somewhat removed from vol. 1. Some very light foxing at front and read with name on title page on both volumes. There is a small tear in pp 59 of the first volume. Book No: 2503513
