More info

First edition of this interesting treatise on the okapi, a cud-chewing hoofed mammal also known as the forest giraffe or zebra giraffe. The illustrations include photographs and drawings of the skins, skulls, and specimens of the animals. The publication of this monograph resulted in some controversy, pitting the author against Sir Harry Johnston, who felt that the work was incomplete, and stated so in a letter published in Nature (with numerous letters to follow). Lankester (1847-1929) was the Director of the Natural History Museum in London, a zoologist and evolutionary biologist.

Hardcover. English. Trustees of the British Museum, London. 1910. ISBN: 0. Unpaginated, with 48 plates. Quarter buckram over cloth boards, gilt lettering on spine. Some fraying to top and bottom of buckram, otherwise a very good copy. Book No: 2502198
