From the book: Africa has been very much in the minds of people everywhere, especially has it been in the minds of the British people, therefore I hope it will be thought that no apology is necessary for my writing this brief account of a ladys journey from the mouth of the Zambesi to the great Lake Tanganyika, which divides German East Africa from the Congo Free State. The journey was full of interest to me, and, having been undertaken through love of travel, and for the purposes of observation only, has presented to me aspects and incidents of native life in British Central Africa which, I hope, will interest and amuse those who have neither time nor inclination to travel so far.
