The German Official Account of the War in South Africa is probably one of the most significant books written about the Second Anglo-Boer War. The reason is that it was not written by one of the interested parties but by outlookers: trained military observers. It is therefore as objective as one can get in historical writings. It is free of the emotions which one understandably finds in the writings of participants. This is Number III in the Scripta Africana Series of rare historical books. The authoritative Mendelssons South African Biography on African books says of 'The German Official Account: The work is characterised by the thoroughness which is so prominent a feature of German productions of this class, and despite constant criticisms of the British methods and military tactics, is written in a perfectly fair and unbiased manner.
