Ewart Grogan (1874-1967) was dubbed the boldest and baddest of a bold, bad gang of pioneering settlers in Kenya. Expelled from both his school, Winchester, and university, Cambridge. After working for some years, he fell in love with Gertrude Watt, but her father denied them permission to marry. The men agreed that were Grogan to walk from Cape to Cairo, the marriage could go ahead! He was accompanied by Gertrude's relative, Henry Sharp, as far as the Ruwenzori. On arriving in Cairo two and a half years later, he sent a telegram to Gertrude and gained a positive response. He had survived hunger, thirst, wild animals, malaria, torrential rain, and an attack by Dinka tribesmen. He became an English celebrity, met Queen Victoria and lived a full and busy life in Kenya with Gertrude at his side.
