It is a hundred and thirty-six years since Joseph Williams died near the present town of Fort Beaufort in the Cape Province. He established the first mission station among the southern Bantu, and was a pioneer of all those great missions, Presbyterian, Methodist, Anglican and others, which have done and are still doing such splendid work in the Ciskeian and Transkeian Territories. Yet his biography has never been written until now.
