The Reverend Edwin William Smith FRAI was a Primitive Methodist missionary/anthropologist and author who was born in South Africa, studied at Elmfield College from 1888, and then worked in Africa. The Mabilles were Christian missionaries whose ultimate aim was the a nation of Christian Basuto. He believed in training the Basuto to take up their 'right and proper place' in the national Church of Basutoland.
