Christopher Hope writes: My work is an attempt to gauge the stress under which the English-speaking White South African exists. For all his claim to belong to Africa, he is not a part of it. ... He is under pressure. So much so that he has long since ceased to be a part of the world. Rather he sees the world as going on alongside him. He is defensive, fearing displacement, not realising that he is already displaced. As I see it, my poems reflect the struggle of one English-speaking White South African to become part of the world again.
