A fascinating account of methods of capturing and training wild elephants in Ceylon in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many accounts of actual elephant round-ups and lots on the animal's habits in the wild and in captivity. Also gives much historical material on the domestication of the species. Many scholarly footnotes and useful references. This is a reprinting of the section on elephant first appearing in the author's 1859 two-volume work, Ceylon: An Account of the Island. Additional material has been added from various sources, particularly in regards to natural history. Included is a chapter on elephant shooting with some notes taken from Samuel White Baker. (Czech). According to the OED, Tennent's two-volume 1859 work on Ceylon included the first appearance of the phrase rogue elephant.
