The Thirty-Nine Steps/Greenmantle/Mr. Standfast/The Three Hostages. He clearly hoped to be remembered as a scholar & a diplomat (and his brilliant academic career at Oxford where he took a first in Greats, was president of the Oxford Union, & gathered a pile of university prizes suggested that he would one day be England's Prime Minister), but a sustained career in politics eluded him, & he survives most vividly in our memory as the creator of some of the more memorable characters in fiction. And of the many he created, none was more memorable than Richard Hannay -- clearly his alter ego -- a man of sure instincts, sound judgment, & almost preternatural physical & mental skills.
