In 1858 over two thousand German peasants left Prussia (mainly Pomerania and Uckermark)to settle in South Africa. They were brought out in response to the failed German Military Settler Scheme of 1857. This book deals with the conditions which led them to want to emigrate and the challenges they faced on arrival in the Eastern Cape. Starting with the descendants of Carl Friedrich Ziehl the book provides information on the Ziehl, Ziemann, Bagshaw, Wright, Mitford, Best, Shaw, Barnes and Dugmore families in South Africa. Lists of military and peasant settler names and maps indicating where they came from and where they settled are als included.
