Travel, in Aquatint and Lithography, 1770-1860, number 514 (pages 469/70), Barrow probably met Samuel Daniell while at the Cape. The aquatinting is of excellent quality, number 10 in particular being technically interesting, since it appears to be printed in as many as three colours with one colour added by hand, while number 11 is printed in green, with other colours added by hand. Barrow was attached on the first British embassy to China from 179294 as comptroller of the household to Lord Macartney. He soon acquired a good knowledge of the Chinese language, on which he subsequently contributed interesting articles to the Quarterly Review; and the account of the embassy published by Sir George Staunton records many of Barrow's valuable contributions to literature and science connected with China.
