Missions and Christianity in South African History

Some two hundred years ago the only Christians in South Africa, were the descendants of European settlers. Today almost 75% of all South Africans call themselves Christians. To what extent were the early foreign missionaries responsible for this massive conversion process? How should missions be treated in South African historiography?
