Formerly called The Hill, the gardens at Claremont in the Cape has long been famous for its trees and flowers and plants from all over the world. These were often brought to Ralph Arderne by sea captains and sometimes they came from Kew Gardens and other famous gardens overseas. Over 150 years old, it is now known as the Arderne Gardens, created by father and son, Ralph H Arderne and Henry M Arderne. This family biography runs from about 1820 to 1914 and the activities of these people, their fortunes, good and bad, provide a lively picture of the Cape in the 19th Century.
