More info

The Rev John Ayliff, 1820 Settler and a well-known pioneer missionary in the Eastern Cape, left amongst other writings a personal diary covering the period 4 April 1821 to 8 December 1831. It is a strangely moving document dealing largely with his tasks as a preacher and assistant missionary and serves to illuminate the kind of difficulties and hardships the British settlers often had to face. Ayliff's journal, now published for the first time, is one of the very few contemporary documents to have survived, dealing with the first decade of Albany Settlement.
