Between dogs and wolves is a multi-layered photographic book. It spans a period of ten years starting in 1994 after the first democratic elections in South Africa. On the surface the title's focus is on youth growing up and living mostly on the fringe of society in South Africa. The author takes us into the world of gangesterism, in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in Johannesburg. We meet David, a 19-year-old living life on the edge, in a poor white neighbourhood called Fitas. We are drawn into the world of street children, a prostitute whose rates vary depending on whether her client is black or white, a father and son trapeze act, immigrant children, the gruesome reality of child abuse, ballroom dancers, children living with HIV/Aids, the dreams and failures in small-town South Africa. On another level, the title deals with the loss of innocence, the way we choose to survive in our youth, the multi-faceted personalities we adopt due to circumstance or past history. It is also a story of strength and courage. This title does not attempt to show where South Africa is heading, nor does it pretend to show the full picture of the country. It is a partial view.
