More info

The 229 drawings and watercolours, the majority of which are published here for the first time, have been selected from a collection of approximately 470 loose leaves and several books containing over 160 works. They were made between 1875 and 1881 by six artists from the San or Bushman people. All six artists were informants of two philologists working in Cape Town, Wilhelm Immanuel Bleek (1827-1875) and Lucy Catherine Lloyd (1834-1914). The book includes contributions by Megan Biesele, Frederic Bruly Bouabre, Elias Canetti, Janette Deacon, Keith Dietrich, Mathias G. Guenther, Roger L. Hewitt and Mikl Szalay.
