Young Frieda Shenton hides under the kitchen table when the white man in the Mercedes takes her father, the schoolteacher-translator, to the mines. Upon their return, there is an English lesson. Frieda's Afrikaans-speaking Coloured parents want her to learn fluent English, so that she may do more than peg out the madam's washing.
